Academic papers are like hourglasses: the introduction opens with a “hook” at its widest point and makes broad connections to the reader’s interests; the paper narrows to a tight, focused thesis statement. The body paragraphs stay relatively narrow and focus on the thesis. The conclusion broadens and reinforces connections to the larger context. Check out our resource on paper structure for more information.
