Academic papers are like hourglasses: the introduction opens with a “hook” at its widest point and makes broad connections to the reader’s interests; the paper narrows to a tight, focused thesis statement. The body paragraphs stay relatively narrow and focus on the thesis. The conclusion broadens and reinforces connections to the larger context.
